Weekend Closures of Highway 400 Bridge at Finch Ave. W. June 12-15 and June 19-22

What is the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT)?
The Finch West LRT is a light rail transit project that will bring 11 kilometres of modern, reliable rapid transit to northwest Toronto. It will have 18 stops, including 16 surface stops, plus an underground interchange station at the TTC Finch West Subway Station. A below-grade terminal stop at Humber College will connect to other local transit services like GO, MiWay, Viva, and Züm. The Finch West LRT will provide rapid transit for the Jamestown, Rexdale and Black Creek neighbourhoods, as well as vital connections between communities and supporting growth in northwest Toronto.

What: The Hwy. 400 Bridge at Finch Ave. W. will be replaced in two consecutive weekends using a rapid bridge replacement technology. During the first weekend, the southbound span of the Hwy. 400 Bridge will be removed and then replaced with a pre-constructed bridge deck. The northbound span of the Highway 400 Bridge will be replaced using the same approach in the second weekend.

Hours of Work:

  • On the weekends of the planned closures, sections of the Highway 400 will close at 10 p.m. on Friday and
    re-open to motorists by 5 a.m. on Monday (see details on reverse); as well Finch Avenue West between Norfinch Drive/Oakdale Road and Signet Drive/Arrow Road will close from 6 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday.
  • The replacement work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

What to Expect:

  • Lane reductions on Finch Ave. W.
  • Finch Avenue West and all interchange ramps at Finch to be closed Friday at 6 pm
  • Closures of Highway 400 lanes at 10 pm (SB and NB, alternating weekends)
  • Sidewalk closures along Finch Ave. W.
  • Detours of traffic and transit.
  • Increased travel time.
  • Advance warning signs (TC-64) on Highway 400 and Finch Avenue.
  • Paid-duty officers at intersections.

Prior to weekend closures

  • Lane reductions on Finch Ave. W. from 7 a.m. on Thursday, June 11 to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 12 and from 7a.m. on Thursday, June 18 to 6 p.m. on Friday June 19.
  • Finch Ave W between Norfinch Drive/Oakdale Road and Signet Drive/Arrow Road reduced to one lane in the eastbound direction and two lanes in the westbound direction.
  • Only one left turn lane at the Hwy 400 southbound ramp.
  • All on and off ramps to Hwy 400 will remain open during this time.

First weekend closure (Southbound) Friday, June 12 to Monday, June 15, 2020:
Closure of the Hwy. 400 southbound lanes at Finch Avenue interchange starting at 10 p.m.

At 6:00 p.m.

  • Closure of all on and off-ramps at the Highway 400 interchange at Finch Avenue West
  • Closure of Finch Avenue West in both directions from Signet Drive/Arrow Road to Norfinch Drive/Oakdale Road

At 10:00 p.m.

  • Closure of all Highway 400 southbound lanes from Highway 407 to Highway 401 (All traffic should exit at Hwy 7 or will be forced off at Hwy 407 ETR)
  • Closure of the eastbound and westbound Highway 7 ramps to Highway 400 southbound.
  • Closure of Steeles Avenue ramp to the Highway 400 southbound
  • Closure of eastbound and westbound Langstaff Road to Highway 400 southbound.
  • Traffic signals at the intersections of Finch Avenue west with Norfinch Drive/Oakdale Road and Finch Avenue west with Signet Drive/Arrow Road will be controlled by paid-duty officers

Note: Last available exit during southbound closure will be Highway 407 ETR. Tolls will apply.

Second weekend closure (Northbound) Friday, June 19, to Monday, June 22, 2020:
Closure of the Hwy. 400 northbound at Finch Avenue interchange starting at 10 p.m.

At 6:00 p.m.

  • Closure of all on and off-ramps at the Highway 400 interchange at Finch Avenue West
  • Closure of Finch Avenue West in both directions from Signet Drive/Arrow Road to Norfinch Drive/Oakdale Road

At 10:00 p.m.

  • Closure of all Highway 400 northbound lanes from Highway 401 to Highway 407.
  • Closure of the eastbound and westbound Highway 401 ramps to Highway 400 northbound
  • Closure of northbound Black Creek Drive ramp to Highway 400 Northbound
  • Traffic signals at the intersections of Finch Avenue west at Norfinch Drive/Oakdale Road and Finch Avenue West at Signet Drive/Arrow Road will be controlled by paid-duty officers.
  • All Hwy. 400 ramps and mainline open north of interchange.

Pedestrian Details:

  • Sidewalks will be closed along Finch Ave. W. between Signet Dr. /Arrow Rd. to Norfinch Dr. /Oakdale Rd. on both sides of the road throughout both weekends.

Bus Stop Relocations/Closures:

  • TTC bus route #36 Finch West, eastbound and westbound, will be detoured.
  • TTC Route #99 Arrow Rd., northbound and southbound, will be affected
  • Bus stops in the affected area may be relocated for the safety of transit riders. Please watch for posted signs indicating the adjusted locations.
  • Relocation and re-routing of bus stops is done in consultation with TTC to ensure construction can continue safely while minimizing impact on the community and customers.

  • During the closure, motorists are encouraged to get up-to-date traffic information at 511.on.ca and listen to local media outlets for the latest traffic conditions.

Following bridge replacement
Crews will work at night to complete asphalt paving and line painting activities on the Highway 400 following the bridge replacement, which will result in intermittent nighttime lane closures throughout June and into July 2020.
