On April 8, 2008 the Emery Village Business Improvement Area were the proud recipients of the inaugural Business Improvement Area Award, in the Smart Growth Category, presented by the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas and the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association. The Smart Growth Award recognizes a project that exemplifies the principles of smart growth in a BIA. The award was in recognition of the Emery Village BIA’s Reconstruction Project at the intersection of Weston Road and Sheppard Avenue West. The project located at Weston Road and Sheppard Avenue is the first major streetscape improvement project to be undertaken by the BIA. The revitalization project involved a complete reconstruction and redesign of the intersection and the creation of a Gateway to the Emery Village BIA. The Emery Village BIA worked together with the City of Toronto who had identified the need to improve pedestrian safety at the intersection. Since the intersection was going to be upgraded by the City of Toronto, the BIA decided to target the intersection for the BIA’s first major streetscape improvement project thereby endorsing efficient, sustainable development.
